Built by José Banús, the port was inaugurated in 1970. In the 1990s, mayor Jesús Gil expanded the port facility with several buildings, despite great protest from environmentalists.

Today the port is a meeting place for wealthy citizens. The mooring fee is sometimes more than 500,000 euros per berth and year. The largest berths are up to 50 meters long. The restaurants and shops found in the harbor are accordingly in the upper price range. In addition, the marina of Marbella is the center of the nightlife of the Costa del Sol. Wealthy people of many nations have berths here
